How it works

The Keep Colchester Cycling project is a concept inspired by community bicycle programs around the globe. Bikes are made available for use by members of the public who do not own the bicycles but can pay a fully refundable deposit to hire them for personal use.
The programs are popular as they provide an accessible alternative to motorised transport, can help to reduce the carbon footprint of commuting as well as enable residents to become healthier through exercise.
The concept is simple, each of the bikes, branded as Keep Colchester Cool, are available to hire for one day at a time. Members of the public collect their bikes from a central point in the town centre using a combination that they are given to a numbered, locked, bike when they provide identification and pay a fully returnable cash deposit of £15.
Every Keep Colchester Cool Bike will come with a lock, safety pack and set of cycle maps - these cycle maps will include discount vouchers for venues along the different routes, exclusively available to people in possession of a Keep Colchester Cool Bike.
